As adept off-road as on, the R100GS drew power from a 980 cc horizontally opposed twin engine that mated to a five-speed transmission. The model was noteworthy for being the first GS model to feature fuel injectors, as well as the first to employ oil cooling.

Features included available anti-lock brakes and heated handlebar grips, with 19-inch front wheels standard issue.
