The BMW Motorrad R1200S motorcycle was offered for the 2006 and 2007 model years only, as a successor to the recently-retired BMW Motorrad R1100S. Compared to its predecessor, the R1200S was both lighter and more powerful. That led to superior handling and better braking, with greater ground clearance and sporty ergonomics adding to the ride experience. The bike featured an 1,170-cc flat twin four-stroke engine that married to a six-speed transmission to produce 122 horsepower and more than 78 pound-feet of torque. In 2008, the R1200S was itself replaced in the lineup by the BMW Motorrad HP2 Sport.

Features included BME Telelever front and BMW Paralever rear suspensions, 17-inch wheels, a 4.49-gallon fuel tank, anti-lock disc brakes, and a trellis-type tubular space frame that was 29 pounds lighter than the frame found on the R1100S.
