The BMW Motorrad S1000R motorcycle debuted in 2014, based upon the BMW Motorrad S1000RR superbike. It incorporated a liquid-cooled, four-stroke, 16-valve, in-line, four-cylinder engine capable of 999 cc displacement, and it mated to a six-speed transmission. Features included a 4.6-gallon fuel tank, telescopic fork front and aluminum swingarm rear suspensions, and Brembo front brakes.

Initially, the bike was rated at 158 horsepower. However, in 2017, it got an output bump to 165 horsepower. Other features that year ranged from a lighter frame and upgraded anti-lock brakes (ABS) to traction control and a new exhaust. A distinctive one: its Gearshift Assist Pro, a quick-shifter that enabled shifting gears without needing to use the clutch or throttle.
