BMW Motorcycle Center Stands
Motorcycle Center Stands vs. Side Stands: What's the Difference?
No BMW motorcycle should be without the option of a center stand for maintenance. It's easy to use -- you simply flip it down, lifting your bike's rear wheel, if not both wheels, off the ground -- and most have three points of contact to keep your ride upright, one of which is its front wheel. This allows you to elevate it somewhat, over-centering and locking it into place -- for instance, for chain maintenance (e.g., lubrication), or so that you can remove a wheel.
One major benefit of motorcycle center stands -- they fit bikes in much narrower spaces. This makes them great for parking on a flat, level, and smooth surface -- in other words, ideal for getting a bike's weight off its tires for long-term storage.
They're different from motorcycle side stands, though. These are intended primarily for parking, as they're more stable laterally and, absent forward roll, completely stable to the left against stands' wide legs. If your bike is in gear, a side stand can also be more stable forwardly of the wheels. However, it can take a lot more effort to high-side it (push it over to the right) from the left, and precautions may have to be taken in certain situations to prevent forward roll and high-siding -- in the former case, chocks; in the latter case, strapping).
Either way, if you're looking to order a center stand online for your BMW bike, be sure it's genuine OEM. It'll be designed and built compatible with it, after all, and that guarantee, you may not get from the aftermarket. You're in luck: BMW Motorrad has what you need, and you can buy it here.
