BMW Motorcycle Fuel Injectors
While older motorcycles feature carburetors, modern bikes have fuel injectors that are responsible for delivering the ideal amount of fuel to the engine.
Unlike an automotive fuel injector, which measures airflow going into the engine and reacts by supplying the fuel needed to counterbalance that air, a motorcycle's fuel injection uses what's known as an "N Alpha" system -- which requires mapped injection.
How Mapped Injection Works
The manufacturer runs an example engine at various throttle levels and RPMs in order to calculate, or "map," the correct fuel mixture for each condition. The map uses the variables to determine the right amount of fuel and inform the injectors of how long they need to stay open.
If your bike uses a steel throttle cable, the cable pulls the throttles open when you turn your throttle. When you turn the grip on a modern motorcycle, however, a computer detects your signal and opens the throttle to deliver the right amount of fuel.
How to Spot Faulty Fuel Injectors
Even the highest quality fuel injectors can eventually go bad, though. Signs of trouble include:
